You all seen one of these infomercials late night on cable television, no not the RONCO ones but those are pretty good as well, they rank second right after the esteban guitars, but I digress. I’m talking about lifetime music collection series, oh the great collections of pop culture; who can forget the compilations such as malt shop fifties, soft “porn” rock. No matter what type of music they are trying to sell you one can see commonalties as they involve:
a) Washed up TV. host or music star (if they are still awake)
b) annoying blonde bimbo who gaze on host/musician is more is oh so sexy
c) random people who has some kind of personal memory attached to a given song
Now, one can ask “why do you care?”
I went to see “Always….. Pasty Cline” play at Omaha Community Playhouse. Which for most part was like being in one of these infomercials, well they did have Schlitz and none of the infomercial had alcohol in them. The play in itself was more or less a collections of Patsy Cline’s greatest hits, the audience was for most part older and I’m sure they had some kind of personal memory associated with each particular song, which made me think about the lifetime music and how many people at the musical have the golden country collections and the special bonus Patsy Cline album. Makes you wonder……. The play itself was pretty good; it makes me wonder if you can do plays like that for other death musicians, just thing about it; “Trucking…. Story of Jerry Garcia” or “Shine on You Crazy Diamond inside a head of Sid Barrett” possibilities are endless.
