getting ready

So you might of heard I like to bike some gravel.  It’s true it’s true.  The GLGA is less than 2 weeks away. Might as well fix up my bike before riding it most of the day.  I know Cornbread loves hills, they’re his favorites for sure.   The question becomes what gear ratio you should use if riding single speed. you don’t want something to low  where you spin out on flats but at the same token you do not want some thing to steep that might be a bit painful. I did what a normal person would do, ask the organizer this led me to 42-18 ratio. Since I had my wheel off the bike and the freewheel was going to be changed I figured why not service the rear hub as well.  Surly hubs are pretty sweet, they are cheap totally serviceable you can take a whole hub apart with leatherman tool ( well maybe that’s a exaggeration but you get my point MacGyver) the whole thing got nice dosage of some grease.

The only thing left to change were the brake pads. After riding stock brakes for 4 months after I bought my bike,  I decided to put something that has a bit more stopping power, this led me to some kool stops red brake pads.  I’ve been using them for couple of years not and as far as stopping power and year round usage it doesn’t get any better than these.   I think I only had problem with them once when they iced over, but that was in dead of winter with temps in single digests and there was 4 inches of snow on the ground. Besides that they work as advertised.  Considering I ride my cross bike at lot they usually last me anywhere from 6-8 months.

After an hour of messing around with the bike it was ready for this weekend. Megan and I watched Top chef, this is the only reality show I watch. Chick with ear gauges that could classify as brake rotors got kicked out for making some questionable chile rellenos, with seitan (WTF? I know I know why would you mess up perfectly good chile relleno)

p.s. scott I don’t want to hear about your experiences with wheat gluten, I’ve made it before and it was good :D I just don’t think it would be good in relleno.
